BookVision is an international project based on cooperation between universities from its very beginning. Over time, it has developed into a broad network of contacts and communication among students, teachers, and universities. The competition is open to all students of art universities and faculties of education for whom the artists’ book or the book form in general serves as a medium for artistic expression. For the fifth edition, we received 220 applications from 45 universities across 18 countries worldwide. From these submissions, the jury, composed of representatives of the V4 countries, selected 94 works for the exhibition.

The fifth edition of BookVision was developed within the framework of international cooperation among the V4 countries. The fifth edition is organized by the Book Design Studio of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ostrava, in cooperation with the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest, and Magdalena Abakanowicz University of the Arts in Poznań. The aim of this broader collaboration in the preparation and realization of the competition was to open space for discussion about the competition with colleagues from partner universities abroad, and to gain feedback, support, new ideas, and develop a shared activity together.

An important aspect of the V4 cooperation is the opportunity to present BookVision V. as a travelling exhibition not only at the Gallery of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music (GAFU) in Ostrava, but subsequently also in galleries in Bratislava, Budapest, and Poznań, thus allowing a significantly wider audience to personally experience a unique selection of artists’ books created by a large number of young authors from the participating schools and countries. The travelling exhibition and accompanying events will continue throughout 2027, and from this edition onward, BookVision will adopt the format of a biennial.

The aim of the project is to collectively present a broad spectrum of works by the younger generation in the form of the book, which, through the necessity of haptic contact with the artwork and the activation of multiple senses, creates a unique intimate space for encountering art. Despite its modest format, the book is capable of containing large ideas, themes, and stories through a wide range of artistic techniques. It can become a space where important personal and social themes intersect, where different artistic disciplines meet, and where physical, digital, and experimental forms of communication can suggest not only the future of the book, but also the future of society as a whole.
